Promoting and supporting reading
In order to engage fully in their education, as well as their complex and ever-changing world, students need to be confident readers. Regular reading benefits students in multiple ways: it increases vocabulary, exercises creativity, and it is directly linked to successful writing. Reading is a complete brain workout because readers practice complex intellectual processes including predicting, visualising, making connections, and summarising.
Our Library staff is continually developing our collection of quality printed fiction and non-fiction books that encourage students’ love of reading and their curiosity about the world.
The Accelerated Reader Program
According to the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions: Freedom, prosperity and the development of society and of individuals are fundamental human values. The bedrock of learning success is the ability to read well. For this reason, all Year 7 students at Punchbowl Boys’ High School participate in the ‘Accelerated Reader’ program. The program is designed to promote, measure, and track reading improvement because we believe that advanced reading skills are essential for 21st Century Learners.
Oliver
Our collection is tracked using Softlink’s Oliver computerised library information management system. Library staff undertakes regular professional training to remain abreast of the latest developments and software applications. The data is used to inform future investment in books and technology based on student usage. So, encourage your sons to borrow books because today’s reader is tomorrow’s leader.
