English

The study of English supports students to become confident communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers, and informed participants in society. By studying how language is used purposefully in a wide range of quality texts, students are taught how meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted, and reflected. Students engage with literature from Australia, including the rich voices of Indigenous composers, and from across the world. Over time, students are introduced to increasingly complex novels, stories, poems, plays and multimodal texts.

In response to their study of literature in Years 7-12, students are supported to respond to texts in critical and creative ways, and to compose their own, increasingly sophisticated texts. Students are taught how to experiment with language devices to compose engaging, original, imaginative texts. They are explicitly and systematically taught how to write analytical essays.

In addition, the English Faculty supports student participation in enrichment opportunities, including the Premier’s Debating Challenge, The Premier’s Reading Challenge, the Metropolitan South & Met South and West Public Speaking Competition for Stage 4, Write-A-Book-In-A-Day, and workshop collaborations with Story Factory and The Lebanese Muslim Association.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:

  • English Extension 2
  • English Extension 1
  • English Advanced
  • English Standard
  • English Studies
  • English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
