Mathematics

At Punchbowl Boys’ High School, our teachers are passionate about teaching mathematics and its application to the real world. By studying mathematics, students develop practical numeracy competencies that are invaluable to any career path they wish to pursue. Our teaching methods build essential skills in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis while catering to students’ diverse learning needs.

Mathematics is mandatory across Years 7-10. During Stage 4 (Years 7 & 8) students study:

  • Number & Algebra
  • Measurement & Geometry
  • Statistics & Probability

This allows students to develop their mathematical proficiency by solving problems in the world around them and applying their understanding to familiar and unfamiliar situations.

In Stage 5 (Year 9 & 10), mathematics has a unique syllabus which provides schools flexibility in the breadth and depth of topics covered. A student develops their understanding and fluency in mathematics through:

  • exploring and connecting mathematical concepts
  • choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems
  • communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly

Students learn to use appropriate technological tools such as online simulators & calculators, Google Docs & Sheets and Desmos to support numerical and mathematical activities.

In Stage 6 (Years 11 & 12), courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)

These courses are designed to meet the needs of all students, whether they are aiming for university entrance, transitioning into vocational pathways, or simply wish to enhance their problem-solving skills.
